Urban Westside Portland - a travel USA review by Jennifer McKinnis
When you travel the USA, you might not come across a city as divided as Portland, Oregon. Portland is not divided in the sense you are thinking, but is divided into four distinct geographical locations, NE, SE, NW and SW. The quadrants physical boundaries are Burnside divides North and South and the Willamette River divides East and West.
A view of Downtown Portland at night
Whenever you travel the USA to a new town, you should always check out the downtown area. Downtown Portland resides on the Westside of the Willamette River. Portland is often described as having a European feel. This is most likely because of the preservation of it's older buildings. You will see beautiful architecture and many, many Victorian era houses.
If you travel the USA to Portland anytime between April to mid December, be sure to visit the Farmer's Market situated in the Park Blocks near Portland State University, Saturdays from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm. Here you will see, smell and fully experience the bounty Oregon has to offer. From filberts to cranberries and flowers to crimini mushrooms, the local growers are happy to give you a sample and talk about the personally produced produce they are passionate about. They will also give you the scoop on the restaurants they supply, so you know where to dine that evening.
If you are looking to pick up beautifully hand crafted goods, on your travels across the USA, make sure you stop by the Portland Saturday Market underneath the Burnside bridge. If your travels around the USA take you to Portland between the first week of march and the 24th of December, you can browse through the market stalls of over 275 local vendors. The market is open Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm and Sundays from 11 am to 4:30 pm. As a bonus, the two weeks running up to Christmas the market runs all week long.
Travel the USA to Portland and see what we have to offer!
