Winter Activities In Indiana - walking the dunes | Elkhart County in Northeastern Indiana features 63 miles of trails for you to explore. The trails wander through pristine woodland while still allowing you to view the orderly Amish farmsteads. There are few places you can travel to in the USA to see these beautiful Amish farms.
The trails were a labor of love from the Elkhart County Snowmobile Club. In recognition of the Native Miami Indians that lived in the area for nearly two hundred years, the Snowmobile Club named the trails were named after them.
When snow conditions are acceptable, the trails are posted as open. This normally is from December to March. You do have to have a registered snowmobile in order to have one out on the trail. The Elkhart County Visitors Center will be able to provide you with more information prior to your visit when you travel the USA.
Elkhart County also has beautiful cross-country ski trails that will enable you to really savor the wildlife and natural beauty of Indiana. Bonneyville Mill County Park near Bristol is a place to find some serene yet challenging skiing. The park's seven miles of trails can please any USA traveler looking to commune with wintertime nature. The trails also pass through the open spaces that surround the oldest operating gristmill in Indiana, the Bonneyville Mill.
If you are looking for a little more than skiing when you travel the USA, Ox Bow County Park also offers many well taken care of cross-country ski trails. The park is located midway between Elkhart and Goshen. When you travel the USA to this park you will find a park that also caters to non skiers with its two sledding hills and a warming house that helps thaw out those frozen body parts.
Some USA travelers are looking for something a little more stimulating, Pokagon State Park near Angola offers the state's only refrigerated toboggan slide. The toboggans run on a quarter-mile track and can reach speeds of 35 to 40 miles per hour. You will have to travel the USA during a weekend in February to take a toboggan run in Indiana, as it is only open then. If you are a thrill seeker, I could not recommend a more exciting activity worthy of traveling across the USA for. |
