Amistad Sailing into NEW London Harbour | Knowing that the city was founded back in 1646 gives you a little clue into the richness and simply the longevity of this city's history. If you are into studying the history of the USA colonial times by traveling to historical sites, be sure to stop at the Hempstead Houses, at the intersections of Hemstead, Jay, Truman and Coit Streets. These homes were built as early as 1678 and have been carefully restored and maintained as important links to early colonial New England. They aren't difficult to find, but check the schedules ahead of time to be sure they are open when you are traveling in New London.
As long as you are touring historical homes, stop by the Shaw Perkins Mansion on Blinman Street, as a huge contrast to the more humble Homestead Houses. Filled with history, George Washington slept in this amazing old building while he was commanding Americans in their fight against the British. The mansion actually served as Connecticut's Naval Office during the American Revolution. Not only is this a great monument to the history of the USA, this old mansion is a great place for travelers who love touring beautiful gardens.
I know there are people who travel the USA on lighthouse tours, seeking out lighthouses specifically. If that describes you, New London has it all. This town is home to the US Coast Guard Academy. Visit the Coast Guard museum in the north end of the city to learn the history of lighthouses, and get more information about the lighthouses that are nearby. There are actually four working lighthouses in New London. They include the New London Harbor Lighthouse, Ledge Light, Race Rock and Little Gull Island Lighthouses. Talk about scenic! The photographic opportunities here are phenomenal, and on a clear day you can see additional lighthouses in the distance. Absolutely beautiful.
Be sure to include a stop to the New London Waterfront Park on Union Street, wile you are in town. Open from dawn to dusk, the waterfront underwent a recent renovation that improved access. It is a great place for walkers, bikers, fishermen, boaters, and just anyone who wants to take in the amazing sights of the Thames River and Long Island Sound.
New London really is a haven for tourists who are looking for a USA city with history, and diverse activities. Between the waterfront, lighthouses, and historical buildings there really is a lot to do here. It is well worth a planned visit.
