Little River Canyon - a travel USA review
Little River Canyon National Preserve
Little River Canyon National Preserve
Little River Canyon is about 35 miles away from the City of Rome, GA. Once there, the wind whistles through pines and elms that line the canyon. There is something for everyone.

You may walk the rocks on the side, take a hike trough the trails off the course of the waters, or there is a place where you can walk directly through the water.

These are roads that take you parallel through the canyon and it is lined with picnic spots. Be sure to pack a big lunch as you will stay longer than you had originally thought because of how beautiful the river and waterfall is.

The scenic drive winds along a two-way paved road (I say paved, cause in Alabama there isn't too many of them in backwoods areas) to the very end of the canyon. There are many waterfalls and plenty of places to enjoy.

While I was there I saw a carload of teenagers that were setting up ropes to do some climbing, raveling down the canyon walls. I don't know about that for everyone, but it sure did seem like they were enjoying themselves as much as we tame ones.

Unfortunately I did not pack a lunch to take or any picnic supplies whatsoever, so I turned back as soon as the hunger pain hit. For those that want to stay there, if you travel further down Hwy 35 there are cabins and parking for travelers. It is just before you get to Fort Payne, Alabama.

The cabins are separate from the canyon and you will need to travel just a bit further to reach them. To get to the canyon itself (from Georgia) you will need to go on Hwy 20 West till you cross the Alabama line.

Hwy 20 will then become I-9. Go about 8 miles and there o the right will be Hwy 35 North, right before you get to Cedar Bluff, Alabama. For about 15-20 minutes stay on that road till you top Lookout Mountain. Go from the River Bridge till there is Hwy 76, turn on to it. This will be the first paved road on the left and it will follow into the canyon.

Enjoy, I know I do...
