| The New Chiam, located just south of Interstate 80 exit 93 near Ottawa, Illinois, on Hwy 71, has been serving fine Chinese food since 1978. The restaurant is well known and loved by the locals for its excellent cuisine, nice atmosphere, and very reasonable prices.
The first thing you notice when you walk into the New Chiam is the beautiful interior. The restaurant is decorated in the distinct oriental style, with oriental arts displayed on the walls, fancy Chinese lamps hanging down from the ceiling and two lions proudly sitting at the large fireplace. You can have a booth or a table; large group sitting is also available, as well as special kiddie seats for children.
The menu features a wide variety of dishes that will satisfy any taste. You can try Cantonese dishes like Hong Kong Stake, Boneless Chicken, or (one of the best, in my opinion) Shrimp in Lobster Sauce. Lovers of spicy food will enjoy Mongolian Chicken and Mongolian Beef, Kung Pao Shrimp or General’s Tsao’s Chicken. All the cooks are native Chinese, so you will be getting the real Chinese cuisine – unless, of course, you choose something from the American part of the menu. Yes, you can order a hamburger, cheeseburger, and French fries if you want, although I honestly can’t understand why someone would go to a Chinese place and do that.
My personal favorites are daily lunch specials, served from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Only for $4 you will be able to choose from 14 yummy dishes, including Mongolian Beef, Shrimp & Mushroom Kell, Sweet & Sour Pork, Barbeque Pork, and several different kinds of chicken. These will be served with a generous side of white rice. Adding only 1 dollar will let you order you a "combination," which includes one egg roll and a choice of ham or chicken fried rice instead of white.
There are also group dinners, from two to six people, also reasonably priced. A dinner for six, for example, will only cost you $56. The choice of dishes for group dinners is limited. You can get Boneless Chicken, Sweet & Sour Pork, or Pepper Beef Tomato Onion for a dinner for two; dinner for four adds the option of Shrimp & Mushroom Kell, dinner for five – Hong Kong Stake, and dinner for six – Pork Subgum. Each person also gets an egg roll, fried shrimp, fried won ton, and rice. Substitutions will be charged extra.
When it comes to drinks, the New Chiam serves beer, a good variety of wine and "tropical drinks" (cocktails) described in detail in the menu, and of course pop (with free refills).
Unfortunately, no truck parking is allowed at the New Chiam; truck driving customers will have to park next door, which happens to be a strip club.
The New Chiam accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express. Their hours are 11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday, 11:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. on Friday, and 4:30 – 10:00 p.m. on Saturday. The restaurant in closed on Mondays. Their phone number is (815)433-3240.
