Cracker Barrel Old Country Store & Restaurant - reviewed by Mary M. Alward
Cracker-Barrel
Some of the appetizing break-
fast dishes at Cracker Barrel
If you enjoy a country atmosphere, stop by Cracker Barrel Old Country Store and Restaurant. As you walk up to the porch, you will be greeted with the sound of country music – a great way to be welcomed. Cracker Barrel’s motto is "to please people," and it is the perfect motto, for they live up to it every time you visit one of their establishments.

Store

As you step through the door, you are whisked back in time to the days of the old country store. Preserves line the shelves. Pick up a jar of apple butter or blueberry topping. Relishes, maple syrup, pancake mix and much more are available in food stuffs. Purchase an apron like Grandma used to wear or even a hand-stitched quilt. Cowboy hats for both kids and adults hang on hat racks throughout the store. T-shirts are available in all sizes from infant to adult XL. Pick up a few for souvenirs of your trip.

Knick knacks, tea cozies, teapots in unique shapes, kitchen wares and many other types of unique gifts can be found in this old fashioned environment.

Restaurant

If you’ve stopped at Cracker Barrel, you need to be hungry. Just off the store you will find the restaurant, which gives you a down home feeling. Sit near a crackling fire on a cold winter day or enjoy a cool breeze from the large ceiling fans and air conditioning if it’s hot outside. Enjoy an ice cold root beer in a frosted mug, or a hot cup of tea to warm you.

If you are looking for a great breakfast, Cracker Barrel is the place to go. Bacon, sausage, pancakes, eggs, grits and real maple syrup are just part of the fare available for a man-sized breakfast. Children’s menus are available.

For dinner, enjoy chicken and dumplings, salad, turnip greens, friend chicken, steak, trout, biscuits and gravy, fresh mashed potatoes and so much more. Quality and quantity top the list at Cracker Barrel.

Décor

The décor in Cracker Barrel stores and restaurants is definitely unique. Plank floors, oak tables and chairs and fireplaces are found in each restaurant. The walls are lined with the things you’d see in a real old country store. Antique kitchen appliances, farm equipment, advertising signs and old photos can be viewed in both the store and restaurant. Coca Cola memorabilia, cigar boxes, butter churns, apple cider presses, colored bottles and shadow boxes all add to the down home atmosphere.

Service

Service is great in both the store and restaurant. Staff are friendly and eager to please. You’ll definitely want to leave a nice tip for your server when you leave our table and re-enter the store to pay your bill, which will be more than reasonable.

History

Cracker Barrel is the dream child of Dan Evins of Lebanon, Tennessee. Dan’s dream began in the late 60’s when he worked in his family’s gasoline business. At that time goods and services were sparse along the new interstate system and Dan knew there was a call for a great service. He dreamed of a homey place to relax and eat, accompanied by an old country store atmosphere. Dan’s dream became a reality in 1969, when he opened the first Cracker Barrel Country Store on September 19th. Today, Dan owns 529 stores in 41 states. Though stock in the Cracker Barrel can be purchased, Dan has no plans to franchise his stores.

Dan has done a terrific job of preserving the lifestyle of rural America. Stop by one of his Cracker Barrels and enjoy great food, great service, quality, quantity and a rural American atmosphere. It can all be found under one roof at any of the Cracker Barrel locations across the United States. Enjoy!
